In December 1982, The Smiths were in their infancy, having formed earlier that year in Manchester. Following their live debut in October 1982, they spent the final month of the year recording, switching rehearsal spaces, and establishing their lineup.
At Drone Studios, they recorded a second demo featuring "What Difference Does It Make?", "Handsome Devil", and "Miserable Lie", which was used to audition for EMI (resulting in a rejection).
The band continued writing new material, including "These Things Take Time" and "Jeane"
